An invitation to start your own “Tiny Rebellion”

A “tiny rebellion” is a conscious decision to challenge, resist, or go against societal norms, thought forms or blueprints that are no longer aligned with your own values or beliefs.

It’s an act of defiance against anything that you consciously no longer want to incorporate in your life. These are small, personal stands that we take to assert our individuality, authenticity, and integrity.

These are the mini versions that we can do on a regular, consistent basis.

When you begin your own journey towards self discovery and uncovering your truest self, you may find that things you used to believe in, activities you used to do, or habits you used to enjoy, no longer fit your current self.

Some of the few things I’ve started doing that really began to enhance my joy and create a sense of peace within me:

  1. Refusing to engage in gossip. I’m more interested in hearing that people are doing well, rather than their dirty laundry. Since I’ve decided not to engage in listening to gossip, I’ve also cut down on reading about celebrity news. My mind feels a lot more peaceful.

  2. Growing out my starlight hair. I used to rush to dye my hair but now, I love seeing the color patterns of my silver hair coming out. It’s been over 2 years since I’ve had my hair professionally dyed and I’m loving the extra time and freedom.

  3. Saying “no.” Whether it’s declining a professional or personal invitation, I’m doing a tiny rebellion against the pressure to always be accommodating without checking within myself on how I would like to spend my time.

  4. Not seeking external validation. This one had the biggest effect on my mental health. When I decided to derive self-worth from within rather than from others, I had a lot more peace within. This goes for anything I post online. I don’t take the likes and views personally. Only that I’m rooted in who I am.

  5. Challenging traditional beliefs. I’ve gently questioned and have chosen to not follow certain cultural or familial beliefs that no longer resonate with my personal values. When I was younger, I was conditioned to finish everything on my plate, which made sense in an immigrant family. Growing up, I released this teaching and adopted one that allowed me autonomy over my own body. I get to decide when I’m full, not the arbitrary size of the plate of food.

A tiny rebellion is about reclaiming your power and living authentically. It's about recognizing that we don't have to be confined by societal expectations or by what others think of us. Instead, we have the freedom and agency to choose what resonates with our true selves and to shed what does not.
